Travel Info Who knows how Buddhism became and who is he?!? Travel Tips Buddhism came to be when Gautama Buddha realized enlightenment, became the Buddha and stuttered teaching the way to enlightenment to others in the 5th century BCE. Buddhism spread throughout the ancient Indian sub-continent in the five centuries following the Buddha's death, and propagated into Central, Southeast, and East Asia over the next two millennia. Today, Buddhism is divided primarily into three traditions: Therav膩da (Sanskrit: Sthavirav膩da), Mah膩y膩na, and Vajray膩na and continues to attract followers worldwide. There are over 700 Million followers and is considered a major world religion. (the Fifth largest if you lump all Christian faiths together.) Buddha was a prince who wanted to understand why there was suffering in the world. He gave up everything he had and sat for many years under a tree in contemplation of that question. He came to the conclusion that suffering is the result of being attached to things in this world, and of desire. Train yourself not to want, and you will be free from suffering. That is the very short answer to a complex question.
