Traveling to Amsterdam solo- is it safe? |
Travel Info I am flying to Amsterdam at the end of April/beginning of May, and want to do most of the "touristy" things (i.e. Hieneken Experience, Anne Frank House etc) I am staying with a friend but she works during the day, is it safe to do these things by yourself? (and will it be any fun wandering by myself?!?!) Travel Tips I am female and went there alone. It was perfectly fine...although I admit I didn't really walk around much at night. There are definate advantageous to being alone in that you can take as long or as little time as you want. ie If you don't understand art and don't want to spend 15mins loking at 1 painting...its fine!) I loved Anne Franks house it was my favourite thing. I walked thru the red light district in the middle of the day eye opening I have to say, but it doens't feel seedy and there were entire families walking though the place with little children! (I am not sure what it was like at night) Walking along the canals are lovely. The only disadavantage is eating etc I find it can be a little "self conscious" eating alone in place, so I often used to eat early or late to avoid crowds. Another thing you can do is go on some tours (of which there are lots) to the windmills, tulip fields, little villages etc. THat way you go with groups of people and you can meet people etc. Taking you camera is a good distraction to! Others It's incredibly safe. And clean. Everyone speaks English, and they LOVE Americans there. I'm jealous! Have a blast... Depends on how old you are, not being a pervert! my BRAIN! As far as Western cities go, Amsterdam is one of the safer ones. I've wandered around there by myself and, in spite of the number of people trying to sell you "things" on the street, it doesn't carry a threatening atmosphere. Frankly, I've felt more at risk in London. 1. YES, it is safe! I know this from experience because I used to live there. 2. Doing these things by yourself is fun, but you will always have more fun with friends. good luck and have fun It will be great fun (weather permitting of course...) as the city is very lively and pretty, and you should be safe in all touristy areas. Watch out for bicycles though, people ride them everywhere! :-) Also the lines to Anne Frank House are quite long, so as your friend what's the best time to visit. |
