For People In Amsterdam, Netherlands?

Travel Info
I want to know more or less places I should go see in Netherlands... not typical tourist stuff, but general stuff that locals like doing every now and then.

Also, perhaps places I can go (for cheap) outside The Netherlands that are worth it.

I thought of a day trip to France, but have heard so many negative comments about France and that the money you pay for the train trip is not worth it.

I live in South Africa and the exchange rate is really crazy, so for me, I'm looking for least expensive things to do.

I tried to look up Youth Passes on the Thalys, but there are no direct passes from Amsterdam to Paris and I have no idea where to connect to get there.

Any advice and help would be so greatly appreciated!

(Ek praat afrikaans in Suid Afrika, dit is bietjie duits, dalk verstaan jy wat ek s锚?)

Travel Tips
So, this is an interesting question.

Besides the typical tourist stuff, it depends on what the person likes. Some go to the beach, some to wander through a nature park, others go to an amusement park (we have a lot of those).

So, it depends mostly on your taste, your wishes.

France is okay, but for a daytrip.. i`d suggest 2 days, 1 to go there, one to return. check www.eurolines.nl for cheap fares.

Germany has nice places too.
There are a lot of people from Suid Afrika in Amsterdam, Den Haag and around that area - so you could also try and find some of those.

You could ask for other people if they can help you around. Many dutch people like to show others around in their area. Source(s): Een Echte Nederlander ;)
Other Travel Tips
If you go to Holland now, they have a special train offer to travel freely by train the whole weekend for 2 persons for about 333.00 South African Rand. It's called NS Lentetoer (see http://www.ns.nl)

Grappig taaltje, dat afrikaans!

Why don't you go to see Berlin, I know that in Germany it's possible to get a cheap train-ticket were you can travel on all day.

The Rough guide and the lonely planet has lots of info, maybe you find that book in your library
Lonely planet is also on the internet but the book gives more info.(were to go, how to travel, cheap places to stay, eat etc.)

I love the islands in the north of the Netherlands.
I find Texel to big, but Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog are very small, both only one town and forbidden for cars. Only the locals can go by car. You can rent a bike to see the island. Boat to Schiermonnikoog is the cheapest. Their are special tickets includes bus and boat from Groningen to the harbour.
Terschelling is a bit bigger, a few places, nice pubs, and Ameland is more flat.

Look up www.transavia.com and you could find some really cheap deals by air to whatever countries in the EU you wish to visit. European budget airlines often give tickets at prices that are much lower than train charges.
