why is there so many bikes in amsterdam as opposed to motorcycles or mopeds?

A bike is cheaper, no fuel, it's healthy to cycle. The city isn't that big so it's easy to get around by bike and you can park your bike practically anywhere. Reasons enough for me to keep on cycling through the city! Source(s): Born on a bike ;)

For motorcycles and mopeds you need to pay insurance and taxes, as well as fuel. Also, Amsterdam has a rather annoying parking law, making that expensive as well.
Quick, cheap and easy to go around. And almost everyone learns to ride on a bike as a kid. So before they have a driving license everyone is using a bike.
They are cheaper, non pollutant, easy to park, don't need fuel and you also end up exercising so that's good to your health as well! :-) Besides it is a flat area, not much ups and downs so that's easy and also it's not that big place anyway, so it works great, I would say!
