Koninginnedag or Queen's Day - multiple questions? |
Travel Info I understand for this holiday that it is very, very crowded, there are vendors everywhere so that people may sell their "junk" as others have referred to it, everybody wears orange, and it's one HUGE party. Now, what I am curious is, what things are closed or if there are too many what are still open? Are all schools and colleges closed? Also, I have read that Queen's birthday isn't even in April. So, why exactly is it celebrated on the 30th of April? What is the significance of wearing orange on this day? Any other information would be greatly appriciated about this holiday and any others in the year. thanks Travel Tips nobody works, its a national holiday. except ofcourse people in hospitality. The color orange is a common sight on Queen's Day, as it represents the House of Orange, which is the name of the current Dutch dynasty. There are orange banners and flags, orange colored foods and drinks. Even the water in some fountains is dyed orange. The holiday is celebrated on this date because it was the birthday of Queen Juliana (1909-2004). When Queen Beatrix succeeded Juliana on 30 April 1980, she decided to keep the holiday on April 30, as the weather on her own birthday, January 31, tends to prohibit the traditional outdoor festivities. Other Travel Tips in addition to the previous poster: Every city has their own version, since 15 years ago, free markets have become popular in major cities. Other places might feature traditional games, displays of local culture, music festivals, etc. There are two other distinctly Dutch festivals. One is the Carnaval 40 days before easter. A fools festival in the catholic south. three days of dancing, drinking, parades and costumes. Another is Sinterklaasavond. The evening of saint nicholas on december 5th. It is a children's festival with lots of traditions. Sinterklaas is the original Santa Claus. |
