Travel Info What do the three "X's" in The Netherlands mean...Determined, Merciful, I can't remember.......? Travel Tips It is the Amsterdam City shield you're talking about. With the 3 words Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig. Valiant,Determined,Merciful, These were added to the Shield in 1946 after WW2. Look up Dokwerker for more info. The 3 crosses are much older they are Andreas crosses. Exact origin unknown. But historians in general agree they symbolize the 3 disasters that have hit Amsterdam in historic times. Water ( Flood ) - Fire - and the Plague. Another possible explanation could be that they symbolize the 3 fordable places of the Amstel river in early Medieval days. Others I must be stupid but I have no idea what you're talking about... Please explain... -edit- Amsterdam? Amsterdam? Oooooh, Amsterdam!!!! I forgot it existed, lol... The 3 xxx vertical are the coat of arms for Amsterdam. They have been around for 600 hunderd yrs. www.wildundergroundtours.com They are from the coat of arms of Amsterdam and don't stand for anything, if you heard something like that it's probably some silly story they tell tourists. You probably mean Heroic. These are the words on the city shield of Amsterdam (Vastberaden, heldhaftig (heroic), barmhartig). It has nothing to do with the X's on the same shield, those are Andreas crosses, the meaning of which is unknown. http://www.amsterdam.nl/stad_in_beeld/ge... |
