Where can I buy food in Maastricht or in The Netherlands? |
Travel Info I've been here for a while and the only thing I find are small stores, and nothing really big like Walmart or something like that. I'd love if someone could aid me, and it'd be happier if someone could even tell me the street that the store is located in Maastricht. Travel Tips Compared to the USA, everything is smaller in the Netherlands (except, perhaps, Dutch ego's)... The best Dutch grocery chain is Albert Heijn, AH for short... They are all over the place...(and even have stores in the USA although they're selling that right now, US Foodservice) http://www.ah.nl Albert Heijn has special LARGE stores called AH XL... They are a lot like US groceries... There's one in Maastricht at the Brusselsepoort 45 They are open every day from 08:00 till 20:00, except on sundays and holidays, and till 21:00 on thursdays and fridays... There's a map at http://www.ah.nl/albertheijn/winkelinfor... If you're looking to buy special US products, like Count Chocula, Frankenberries and frozen Burrito's you can find those at special US import (expat) stores but they charge astronomical prices... Others As far as I remember from my short visit to Maastricht last February, you can find few stores on the extension of Station Street on Wyckerburgstraat. I also went to the market across the bridge and roamed the streets between Market Square and Vrijthof Sqaure and came across a small supermarket somewhere around there. I think it was on Helmstraat. Sorry, this is what I remember. Good luck. look at this...I'm sure you'll find what you are looking for http://www.vvvmaastricht.nl/index2.php3... Luckily Walmart isn't in the Netherlands (that's why there's still lots of small stores in all city centers, I guess you could see the center of Maastricht as one really big Walmart). For groceries the biggest chain is Albert Heijn. See http://www.ah.nl/albertheijn/winkelinfor... for stores in Maastricht. The ones on the Brusselsestraat and Scharnerweg are the largest ones (AH XL would be something closest to Walmart, but there isn't one in Maastricht). If you really want to go to a Walmart size store you would have to go to Luik (Liege) in Belgium to Carefour (see http://www.hypercarrefour.be/shopsearch_... enter "Luik" in the "plaats" field and hit go). Most common supermarkets in the Netherlands are, C1000, Edah, Albert Heijn, Konmar, Super de Boer, Plus, Aldi, Lidl. You could google for one of them in Maastricht. Try to find one in your neighbourhood on http://www.winkelboulevard.com /supermarkten/ supermarkt_maastricht.html or on http://www.ilocal.nl/ Supermarkten/Maastricht.html (Both adresses to long for yahoo, just copy them) The Netherlands doesn't have stores like Wal-Mart and Super-Target, which i actually like about it. I just moved to the USA and still prefer to go to smaller stores, you almost get lost in a Wal-Mart. The nice things about the smaller stores is that they can have unique groceries, just for that chain, while a Wal-Mart has mass production. Carefour indeed comes close to those kind of stores, but you have to go to Belgium. |
