What is it like in amsterdam?

me and my boyfriend wanna move there (yes cuz where stoners) and we wanna know some info on the people,culture language ect. do they speak english?

First of all, it's a stoners' dream. But don't think that everyone there is a pothead, there are some locals, but mostly tourists frequent the coffeshops. The weed is the best in the world, though. People are friendly, pretty much everyone under the age of 50 speaks English VERY well, but they will definitely find it amusing (and admirable, too) if you could learn some Dutch. It isn't a very hard language to learn. The canals are beautiful, it's wonderful to walk along them on the way to a museum or park. It is often cloudy and rainy, but that is my favorite kind of weather. Overall the Dutch are extremely open-minded, which is refreshing, and basically it is my favorite city that I've ever been to!

Well, actually, they speak Dutch. My experience with a vacation there is that most people can speak English, so you can get by. Still, if you plan to live there, you had better expect to learn Dutch.
Every one in Amsterdam speaks English as a second language, most do it very well too. They will first speak to you in Dutch, then switch over to English. Dutch is a very hard language to learn by the way.

Amsterdam is a great city to visit, however I wouldn't want to live there. It's cold and damp much of the year, kind of dirty and lots of petty crime. The job market isn't good unless you have a skill in need, and the cost of living is high. Great vacation, you should visit first before making any decision.
Almost every Dutch speaks English. And very well so. Living however in the Netherlands is not as exciting as you might expect. In short, I find Dutch being unmotivated, simplistic, arrogant, lately also nationalistic and deep inside them stingy peasants.
Dutch - they're a normal human - like any other people on this earth. It's not because of they're born as Dutch then they're different than other people ;)

But yes those Dutch people (me for example) are not arrogant or don't have any motivations in life. We're not stingy but thinking the priority. If we want it or we need it. Not so many Dutch go to coffee shop - those are tourist :P

Yes, Dutch speaks english... most of them - especially the young generation beside Dutch language.

Our culture is quite simply - but interesting - you will find it out yourself and it will be your new experience. Learn new culture, people, languages, place always a great adventure ;)

I guess Frank B met the wrong people.

Moving to the City of Amsterdam might prove hard.
Spaces to live in are at a premium, if available at all.

I would suggest a place such as Amstelveen, which is close to Amsterdam, with good public transport facilities.

And, don`t expect that people will welcome you with open arms. In general, the dutch have become a bit tired of all those tourists that come here in the mistaken belief all of us are drug-addicted weed smokers, and that all drugs are legal here (a favorite story of the Americans for some reason - they seem not to WANT to understand how things work)

If you do wish to live in Amsterdam, i`ve been told you need to have a job in Amsterdam as well. A friend of mine lives there, but his job moved outside of the city, and now he has to find another place to live.
