How did the Netherlands got its name?

Travel Tips
The netherlands got its name from the fact that they are "low lying" or netherlands. Maps dating back to the 10-12 century show a large part of the country especially north and south holland under water and controlled by the tidal waters. As a result large part of the country were what we would call "wetlands" which would flood during high tide. This remained the same until they figured out how to use windmills to keep the water outside the dikes.
Others
Nederland means Low Land. The Netherlands is actually a delta, where 3 rivers, Rijn, Waal and Maas more or less flow into the Northsea. This delta is very flat and a part of it is even below sealevel. Also "low". Neder Land= Low Land.
