Amsterdam is dirty because it's full of obnoxious American tourists. It's the same reason their are so many stoners everywhere they are American's. If you take a closer look you'll find that the city is really beautiful with canals and incredible architecture and historical landmarks. Unfortunately, allot of American tourists pay for flights to exotic places and they congregate together and that's all they see is each others trash and rude behavior. Later, they tell everyone how ugly and dirty these places were like they know something now that they spent a nanosecond somewhere. Next time get off the regular beat and path and you will find that this is a truly beautiful city. Some people com pair it to Venice but you probably think that city is hideous right...

What do you mean by 'dirty'?
Dirty as in ... sexual? The Puritans never lived there. There is much, much more to Amsterdam than sex and drugs (those are a very small part of it anyway) - it's a beautiful city with friendly people and a ton of history. I'd live there if I could.
I guess potheads don't have much time to clean the place up
Liberal hotbeds always attract lots of homeless and they are dirty. San Fran, Seattle, Amsterdam, Vancouver - tons of homeless - very liberal.
Dirty? Have you been to Amsterdam? It is beautiful! I mean, it is a big city and with that many people there tends to be garbage - but I didn't think it was dirty compared to lots of other big cities.
I really don't think it's worse than many other cities I've been in. Perhaps you were there at the end of the day, especially if there was some big festival or whatever? It does get littered sometimes but they have many people cleaning up all the time too, so it doesn't stay that way for long.
