Travel Info Is there a specific reason that people who live in Holland are called "Dutch" whats the history here ? Travel Tips The Dutch are called Dutch because they speak Dutch. No I'm not being flippant. It is quite natural that a word initially denoting a language over time extends also to those who speak it. In fact, the same is true for English and the English. This is not a process that happens overnight, the use of the word "Dutch" to indicate the language was already in use in the 9th century. The use of the word "Dutch" to indicate the people didn't come into use until the 12th/13th century. However, keep in mind that this is an issue only in the English language. Dutch people in their native tongue call themselves "Hollanders" or "Nederlanders". Germans call them "Holl盲nder", French call them Hollandaise etc.etc. Others Dutch came from Diets which is the pre-language in the middle ages in this part of Europe. From Diets: German and Dutch evolved. History fact I don't know which a** gave M a thumb-down, but it must have been some one that doesn't have a clue.......... M is correct, the ancient language "Diets" developped into Dutch and German (Deutch). Give him 10 points!! Oh, and any person calling us Holl盲nder, Hollandaises or Hollanders, will only relate to the western part of our country, the two provinces of Holland. People in the Netherlands call themselves Nederlanders. And we call our language: Nederlands |
