What does nether mean in dutch?

Travel Tips
"Nether", in "Netherlands" isn't Dutch. It comes from "Neder", in "Nederland" (Nai-der-lahnd). "Neder" means low, so therefore, Nederland means "Low Land". This is true. Much of the Netherlands is below sea level, but thanks to our dykes, we are safe and sound.

Hope this has helped,

S.O.

The same it does in English.
It means North....as in The Netherlands...The North Lands!!
The Netherlands = De Nederlanden = The Lowlands
Compared to the sea, the land level is low here.

--> The lower lands

To Andy H2:
It definitely does not mean north (such non-sense!)
Am Dutch
