These crosses are named after the apostle St. Andrew who is said to have been martyred on such a cross. On March 29, 1947, the position the people of Amsterdam had taken during the German occupation in 1940-1945 led queen Wilhelmina to add to the coat of arms the device: Heroic, Resolute, Compassionate Others the xxx are from the flag of the city of Amsterdam i believe, i am dutch but even i am not sure hahahaha sure would make sense considering what amsterdam stands for in many tourists minds |
