If you're English arriving in Amsterdam?

Travel Info
in your a British citizen arriving in the Netherlands (specifically Amsterdam) with the intention of staying permanently, do you need to register for any kind of permit of card of residence or anything? I know that in theory you are entitled to live and work there but surely you need to register this? because surely you need a Dutch national insurance/tax number if you intend to work there?

where is a good place to go in Amsterdam to ask about these issues, Police Station? British Consulate? some kind of municipal building?

any help much appreciated

Travel Tips
I'm English & have lived here for 6 years you need to go to the town hall in dutch Gemeente of where you live in holland & get what is called a sofi nummer National Insurance to you & me take your passport & birth certifacte BUT MAKE SURE they Don't accept a birth certicate older than 6 months to the date that you go. As for a stamp you don't need one because your in the EU but if you need a morgage you will have to get one but you can get them for so long eg 6months 1 year etc. but make sure your up to date with the rule coz they do change on a regular basis again passport & new birth certiacate. Have fun living over here.

Ask the Dutch consulate in England first. They can tell you everything you need to know.
You are part of the European Union. I think that is should be ok. Go to the Consulate web site and check there it will tell you all you need to know.
www.ind.nl go there there is a link for english, here you can find all you need to know, it's the immigration service.
you can also try the counselate or ambasy, good luck
yes you defenitly do. a brittish consulate would be best i believe!

good luck!
well i'm living there now and i'm only 15 but what i know is that you need a residence card which you have to carry around with you if you're over 15
