How is New Orleans faring nearly 2 years after Katrina?

Travel Info
I've always loved New Orleans. I'm just wondering how the town is doing now?

Are they making a comeback? How is the French Quarter? Did that area get hit very hard?

Thanks for your answers!

The French Quarter did not flood, so I have no idea how
"txofficer2005" saw waterlines on buildings there. He also says he visited almost a year ago and there have been huge changes (mostly improvements) since then.

The FQ, Garden District, and much of uptown + the city center was built on high ground when the city was founded and suffered only wind damage from Katrina. You have to look very closely in the FQ and other high parts of the city to see that Katrina even happened.

The parts of the city that were badly flooded are still struggling to recover, and local & state government incompetence are adding to the problems (search "Louisiana Road Home" for more info).

No one knows exactly how many people now live in New Orleans, but it is probably a little over half the pre-Katrina population. Note that the City of New Orleans is only part of the greater New orleans area. The pre-katrina population of the GNO area was about 1.3 million and it is estimated at 1.1 million right now. Almost all of the 200,000 "gone" population lived in New Orleans, Saint Bernard Parish, and Plaquemines Parish. Jefferson Parish (just to the west of the city) sustained only minor flooding and has fully recovered.

The tourism industry is making a tremendous comeback, despite what "re.gibbs" says..

They are slowly making a comeback, facing an uphill battle against crime and poverty.

Tourism is struggling, but they are doing full-force advertising campaigns. I was there last September and people are still drawn to the magic of the French Quarter. You can still see the waterlines on some buildings in the French Quarter, but that does little do detract from the party atmosphere that continues on streets such as Canal and Bourbon.
the french quarter is fine, it wasn't hit hard by katrina and the subsuquent flood, though many of the small businesses are struggling due to decreased tourism. the rest of the city has major problems, rising crime rates(we're now the worst in the country), horrible schools, dangerous roads, drainage issues with every thunderstorm ... i had high hopes for the city after the storm, but after alomst two years i'm starting to really wonder if the city's capable of making a full comeback, let alone fixing problems that existed before the storm.
The comeback of New Orleans is proceeding slowly. Tourism is coming back, but still has a long way to go. The tourist areas of the city are fine; they were NOT flooded. The only thing is, there is still a shortage of labor and affordable available housing. Basic services are restored in most areas of the city; many restaurants are open again, and most of the hotels in the downtown area are open. In other areas, such as the lakefront and the Lower 9th Ward, people are struggling to rebuild their houses and get on with their lives. There are some in New Orleans who are sticking with the city and determined to help rebuild because New Orleans is unique and has a culture and atmosphere not found anywhere else. But others have decided to leave the city. As for me, I'm a New Orleans tourguide currently living in the Baton Rouge area, but longing for the time I can get back to New Orleans.
