Hotels about 30 miles west of New Orleans...safe area?

Travel Info
I have no reservations yet, but don't mind driving into New Orleans if traveling from a safe area. Is this a good idea?

Travel Tips
John, that would depend on the time of day you would be coming into New Orleans. You could run into heavy traffic into the city between 7am-9am. The other respondent who told you the areas to avoid is correct, and the same thing for the crime--it's mostly drug-related and not in the tourist areas. I would say it's O.K. to go to the Lower 9th Ward during the day, as there are probably other volunteers there doing work. There are also tour buses going thru there.
Hotels in the city are likely to have cheaper rates, as this is the slow summer season, and the Essence Fest is over. I'm assuming you're going all the way to St. Bernard Parish to work,or perhaps the 9th Ward. I would stay in the city so you wouldn't have so far to drive and that would save on gas. You don't want to use more gas than necessary, right? Here are some recommendations: The Prytania Park Hotel, in the Lower Garden District, with FREE parking and is in a safe area--www.prytaniaparkhotel.co... Comfort Suites New Orleans Airport, www.comfortsuites.com/ires/hot... the Days Hotel of Metairie, www.dayshotelneworleans.com, or further out, there is the Hampton Inn Laplace (La PLOSS), 985-652-5002, right off I-10, and the Quality Inn, also in Laplace, 985-652-5544. The first 3 I mentioned all have free parking, and I'm sure the ones in Laplace do as well. Source(s): The New Orleans Visitor Guide 2007, and I'm a New Orleans tourguide
Other Travel Tips
i think ur trying to avoid the crime in they city, but you should know 98% of the crime is in heavy drug traffic areas, not in tourist areas. you will be perfectly safe staying in the city. staying 30 miles outside of new orleans causes un needed driving. i would stay downtown, any downtown hotel is fine. if you really want to stay outside the city, try metarie or kenner near the airport.
stay out of the 9th ward, new orleans east, and the westbank. tourist areas are fine, that's where they concentrate the police presence. we need our tourist money! stay around the french quarter, the garden district, and uptown and you'll be safe and have plenty to do.
