Rules for group rentals in NYC?

Hey. Me and 4 of my friends are planning a summer trip to NYC in August 2007. We are now looking for apartment rentals for 2 or 3 weeks.
The problem is im not entirely sure abut the fees provided on websites regarding weekly fees. If the fee posted on the classfield is, say 1400$ per week for a apartment big enough forf 4 of us is it absolutely okay that we divide the fee between 4 of us without informing owner of the apartment.
In other words: does it make any difference for owner of the apartment how many people will be living there for 3 weeks as long as he gets his fee? I know its a pretty basic question but i want to know for sure. Thanks for yourf answers.

It works just like apartment rent. If the rent is $1400 for the apartment, it's okay to divide it however you want, but you should notify the owner how many people are living there.

The requirement to notify the landlord should be in the lease that they send you. Some landlords will charge an additional fee per extra person staying because of additional cleaning time after you leave, etc. Just read the lease carefully and do what is required, if you want the place.
