Good neighborhoods to live in with in NYC?

Travel Info
I'm moving to NYC in a couple of months for a job located in Times Square. I'm looking to either live in Manhattan or Brooklyn. I'm pretty familiar with Manhattan...however not so much with Brooklyn. Which neighborhoods in Brooklyn would you recommend living in...or staying away from? I'd like to be relatively close to the city (within 20 minutes) and would like a fairly safe neighborhood.

Travel Tips
You should consider Queens.
The rent is cheaper and depending on the location the commute can be much much quicker than in Brooklyn (plus cab fare won't cost you an arm and a leg!).
Forest Hills is too long of a commute. Its a great neighborhood with everything you'll ever need and the rent is cheaper...but you'd be looking at a 40 minute commute to Times Square.
I highly recommend Long Island City. The area is developing now but the apartment buildings by the waterfront are gorgeous and much cheaper than Manhattan prices. Plus, the commute from Vernon-Jackson Avenue in Long Island City to Times Square is literally 10 minutes! And the neighborhood is cool with a lot of young people and artsy types.

The Avalon Riverview and the apartments around that area (right on the waterfront) are lovely with doormen and gyms and AWESOME views of Manhattan!
Here's a website of Long Island City in general: http://www.licweb.com/

And for rental resources, check out apartments.com or do a yahoo search.

Here's an article from AM New York all about the godo n bad of Long Island City and all the apartment pricings: http://www.corcoran.com/guides/index.asp...

New York City?
Why not Queens? It's a much nicer and safer borough. The best neighborhood is FOREST HILLS.
take a walk...stand strong, any neighborhood...gain respect, don't be scared....thats how ya walk thru NY...any lil shitheads will thrive on fear...Don't be that person!
to be honest i dont know much about brooklyn, but i do know a lot about manhattan, you can live in 100st. to 40st. on both sides (east and west side). tribeca is a rich neighborhood, an apartment costs at least 1,000,000 dollars
For Brooklyn and wanting a 20-minute commute, I would pick the Brooklyn Heights area. This is West of Flatbush Avenue and has all of the street names that are fruits and encompasses the Promenade (which overlooks the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway).

Bay Ridge is also a good place to live, but the commute will definitely be more than 20-minutes regardless of train or car traffic.

Your options are limited, you might also try the Clinton Hill area (near Brooklyn Tech H.S.). This area has a great many brownstones that have affordable rent (my sister used to live there). This area is just East of Flatbush Avenue and has quite a number of college students living in the area.
