Going to NYC. All the hotels have very good reviews and very bad reviews. How do I know which one to pick?

Travel Info
I'm trying to pick online a nice hotel in midtown NY, in the vicinity of 180-200 US a night, but according to any page with reviews, the same hotel can be a great experience and a dump.

Any advise?

Travel Tips
stay on a main road, not off in some dark street...

so the main avenues are 6th, 7th, 5th, Madison, Park, Lexington. (aves run north and south)

and the main streets are 14th, 23th, 32, 42, etc.. (streets run east and west).

they might be a bit more expensive, but definitely worth it and safer.
Others
Depends on where you want to stay. Recently, we have stayed at the following:
* Skyline at 10th and 49th - Bigger rooms, located in Hell's Kitchen - close to dining and theater district - walk 5 blocks straight on 49th with the hotel at your back and you're at Rockefeller Center. Check website for deals.
* Portland Square Hotel- Times Square area, shopping to the right and theaters to the left as you exit the hotel. Small rooms but very convenient!
* Novotel 52nd and Broadway - nice hotel, good location - pricing is wildly fluctuating. Great view of Times Square from atrium restaurant.
Again, check websites for deals/packages.
Hotel reviews are all good/bad. Everyone's experience differs and the truth is if the room is clean (all of above are), in NYC - you're not gong to spend that much time in the room anyway!
We visit the city several times a year and depending on how many in your party - you may want to know the following:
* Skyline has larger rooms
* Portland has smaller rooms but great access
* Novotel is more upscale and if price is right may be a good choice
There are many options in the city and rates have been skyrocketing due to demand. If price is too much in midtown - try the Hampton Inn in Secaucus. Train nearby to get into midtown.
Enjoy the Big Apple!

Many of the folks responding to these questions, live in NYC so we don't use these Hotels with the exception of Conferences and such.

I must admit that some of these Reviews on sites like Tripadvisor are wildly divergent.

What we can do for you is tell you what other travelors visiting here said about places they were staying. A while back I met a sweetie visiting NYC and she stayed at the Herald Square Hotel on 31st between Madison and B'way - She liked the place and it is moderately priced.

Need something cheaper - try the Madison Hotel. Cheaper rates, but as you will notes on the reviews, a few people may have had axes to grind.

The areas both these Hotels are in are nice, and central to public transportation.
When looking at hotels on tripadvisor, I look for things like.."clean room".."safe area"..clean bathroom"...I dont pay much attention to the comments about rude desk people. Lots of people write reviews where they only comment on bad service..with reviews like those, you dont learn anything about the hotels rooms..

I just want to know if I'm going to have a clean room and a bed thats comfy to semi-comfy.

Have you tried The Pod hotel ?...good reviews...their rooms in the vicinity of 180-200 bucks are shared bathroom..
This same question was asked a few days back.
