My brother & I are moving to the NYC area in Aug. We need somewhere to live..where should we start looking?

Travel Info
We will both be attending grad school at different universities (Seton Hall & Columbia). I'll also be working in Manhattan. Help please! :o)

Travel Tips
If you are going to Seton Hall is in Orange, NJ - not too far from Newark. I would suggest you look in NJ (Jersey City is easy to get to Manhattan). The trip from Seton Hall to Brooklyn or Queens will be unbearable.
Others
Brooklyn is close to the City, and very easy to get there by subway. The rent is a Whole lot cheaper than Manhattan.
Try Williamsburg (Brooklyn), Astoria (Queens) or Washington Heights and Inwood (Manhattan).

On a student budget, they're probably the nicest neighborhood you can get without going broke. Transportation is readily available in those neighborhoods and it's a quick commute to anywhere in Manhattan.

For a 2 bedroom rental in one of those neighborhoods, you're going to spend $1200-$2000 a month... and that's cheap!

Use Craigslist. It will be your bible!

every place in Brooklyn that is safe to live in isnt that much cheaper than manhattan.

you can find cheap places, but do you want save money on rent and spend it on bars, heavy-duty locks and a guard dog?

check out these sites to get a feel for whats out there. if you want the real truth on the neighborhood, reach out to me, ive been here almost 24 years come this summer

Morningside Heights is an obvious place to look, being where Columbia is located. Lots of the side streets have reasonably inexpensive apartments. You might also check out Hoboken and Jersey City as being not too outrageously priced, and convenient to the PATH train to get into Manhattan. Another possibility, although less convenient for Seton Hall unless driving, is Inwood. There are apartments there that are still not badly priced, and it is near Columbia's athletic fields. It is near the #1 IRT subway that goes straight to Columbia, and is at the start of the A train, convenient for much of lower Manhattan.
Joe is right. It is too far to commute from Brooklyn or Queens to Seton Hall. It is cheaper to live in NJ than Manhattan so look for an apt in Essex County that is near a train to NYC. Check the NJ transit train schedule and you can see the towns that are near the train. NJTransit.com Some parts of Newark have become gentrified that are near the train station, but you have to be very careful where you live in Newark. Get a good realtor. You can also live in Harrison or Jersey City or Hoboken which are on the Path train that goes between NYC and Newark, NJ. They are safe.
Morningside Heights near Columbia is a lovely area as well.
