Is New York suitable for a solo male traveller? |
Travel Info 1-Is it safe? I heard that crime is very common there. 2-Is it true that there's too much humiliation at the airport? I have a middle eastern look. Travel Tips I am a woman and I walk around Manhattan by myself all the time and never once have felt unsafe. You probably will be stopped going through security- they stop everyone (except, oddly, me- I've never been stopped). I doubt you'll be humiliated, though. Don't say anything snotty or act put-off and you'll be fine. Others Wow! Is this how bad NY looks like to foreigners? That's pretty sad. To answer your questions: 1 - NYC is one of the safest big cities. It's not like you walk down the street & will be robbed. It's just like any other big city. As long as you are aware of your surroundings you should be fine. The people who get robbed are usually the ones who walk with expensive camera equipment, etc hanging off their necks, making it easy to steal. 2-I'm sure there are racist people working in the airports but at most, you may be searched. I have a Middle Eastern friend who always gets searched. Very sad, I know. But other than that possibility, you shouldn't have any problems. Since 9/11 they are more strict but they also realize that people have the right not be accused & humiliated in the airport. You will be fine. Don't be so scared. NY isn't even close to being as dangerous and some people think. They don't humiliate you at the airport. Those men were not stopped because of a middle eastern look, it was the suspicious behavior on the plane. Everyone gets searched at random. I am a blue eyed, light haired woman and I have been searched a number of times. Your boarding pass has a random number on it and that tells them to search you. Also if you fly one way you are more likely to be searched. Jews. Italians and Greeks in NYC also have a middle eastern look and are not bothered, nor are my Pakistani friends. It is very safe there. Actually, the crime in NYC is very low, much lower than other cities. 15-20 years ago it was high, but not anymore. My son, who is 23, travels solo to NYC all the time. You will love the city. Everything is there. |
