Is living in New York City right after college impractical?

Travel Info
Supposing I find a decent entry level job there, is it completely ridiculous that I couldn't find an apartment in Brooklyn? Is it cheaper to have a two bedroom w/ roommates or just a studio?

Travel Tips
first of all, you better pack back some cash because it is very expensive no matter what burro or neighborhood you decide to live in.

if you plan on having a car there please remember you will have to pay to park your car whever you go practically, even at home, and it can be pricey. most people go by taxi or if you work near where you live, everyone walks, goes by subway.

at an entry level position a studio is going to start aroung $1200.00 a month and that does not include utilities, which means you will need money for deposits.

expect to get a walk up only if you are on a budget and i mean 4 or 5 flights. then consider furnishings. if you have them to take with you, save yourself alot of trouble and get a moving company. it may be a little more expensive but they are responsible for parking loading and unloading and carrying all your things up the stairs.

i dont think moving to an exciting city like new york is is ridiculous at all. if you dont do it now, then when? and when will come quicker than you think.

contact the new york times for some back issues and go on line to look for roommates. i would much rather have 5 roomates and get a better apartment in a better location than live alone and have to have 4 door locks on my 5th floor 2 room apartment. have you considered where you might want to work? if so contact their new york headquarters and ask for human relations dept.

they should be able to answer general questions about salaries and openings you might be interested in. even if it starts out in the mail room, its a start and gives you a chance to get a feel for the city as well as how the corporate structure of that city works. every city has its own personality and it list.
make it a point to find out.

different burros offer a variety of ways to connect with people with interests you have in common. if your artsy you might want to check into the village or soho. try the village voice.

if you know someone who lives in new york already pick their brain. go on line to a chat room in the city and get to know some people at least on line. they may be a wealth of info from apts and roommates, as well as jobs etc.

also, i dont know where you are from but the summers are a sweltering kind of heat and the winters can be brutal. make sure you have the clothing to accommodate that climate.

clearify what entry level means to you and what entry level is in new york

contact the new york times

go on line and search and search and search

list the funds you have on hand

make a mock up budget from the info you acquire and then add 40%, so you are in reality land right from the start.

contact prospective employers human resources

get a city map of new york and surrounding areas and as you read the apt listings use push pins of one color to mark where they are. the use puch pins of a different color for the areas you may want to work, and lastly use one more color of push pins to mark where your entertainment venues are.

now, step back and see where you have the biggest cluster of the same push pins. thats the area you want to concentrate on.

i know it sounds kind of crazy but it really works.

also if you have a good bicycle and pad lock, take it with you or buy one there. if you buy one there expect to pay $500 and up for one that will last and serve you well.

ask yourself why brooklyn seems to be of interest to you. and since your planning on going right after college, post flier at your school and look for others that may want to move also.
who knows , you may end up taking your roommates with you or they may have connections already.

the whole world is in front of you, dont let anyone tell you that an idea or dream you have is ridiculous. if your mind can conceive it your body can achieve it. its a mind over matter thing.

best of luck on your new journey where ever it takes you, just go........ its not the destination its the journey that you will remember.

i love new york, and i live now in alabama, go figure? but the journey has been sweet.

Other Travel Tips
Unless you really know the roomies, it is best not to get into a situation you can't bail yourself out of should one of them leave. Gather some bucks before heading there, it is truly eye opening as to what housing costs!
Sharing is cheaper, if you can find a trustworth, reliable roomate. Be careful. Rents are high even in "bad" areas.

Sometimes you can get lucky and find a good place just for yourself. Remember you can try commuting from the many nearby suburbs in NJ, Long Island, and Connecticut.
Just go to NJ for more affordable and comfortable living and commute to NYC. Places like Jersey City, Union City, WNY, and North Bergen are all on the edge of NYC with affordable housing and great mass transit.

Someone described a starters studio for $1,200 in NYC, in my city (Jersey City, nice area) that same price could get you a 3 bedroom (split it with 3 roomates and you're living cheap).
Landlord in Jersey City born and raised.
to answer your actual questions:
no, NOT impractical. It will be fun

no, NOT ridiculous. It you got $40K to start, you would be on pretty good shape

roommates are cheaper. Then you can split the cable, internet, etc as well
