Lesser-known NYC attractions? |
Travel Info What are some offbeat/lesser-known good places to visit in NYC? I'm going in about a week for the second time and saw most the major tourist attractions the last time. We'd like to find some neat places to go that aren't as well-known but are still worth visiting. Thank you in advance. Travel Tips Odd museums: Manhattan--Museum of Sex; Chase Bank Money Museum (there's possibly a conceptual link to the sex museum in the coin used to purchase brides in the monmey museum); The Cloisters (most beautiful spot in NYC; Museum of the City of NY (stuff going back to the Indians and Dutch); Museum of the American Indian; Dyckman House (British Army HQ in the Revolution) Staten Island--Marchais Tibetan Museum (the only one in the USA); Conferfence House (site of the only peace conference during the Revolution, US commissioners included Franklin and John Adams); Richmondtown Restoration (restored colonial village); while on Staten Island eat at the Bay Street Bistro (Mongolian food, really delicious) Brooklyn--Botanical Gardens; Brooklyn Museum (where Giluliani while mayor set off a controversy about an exhibit) Queens--Bowne House (stop on the underground railroad) Flushing Hall of Science and adjoining zoo with an aviary where you walk at tree top level to see the birds) Others Walking Tours - It is common in New York to see tour buses loaded with sightseers. Though many tourists choose to see the city on wheels, a walking tour is a fun way to investigate a smaller area more intimately. Several walking tours are themed. If you're interested in history, architecture, literature, film (or a variety of other subjects), there's bound to be a walking tour for you. Visit this http://www.howstuffworks.com/framed.htm?... to find a walking tour to match your interests. Street Fairs - A real treat for New Yorkers in the summer months are the numerous street fairs that take place throughout the city. Street fairs offer a variety of vendors, food and entertainment. You can find a list of street fairs http://www.howstuffworks.com/framed.htm?... Staten Island Ferry - There is no better deal in Manhattan than the Staten Island Ferry. The ferry is free, operates 24 hours a day and leaves every 30 minutes (15 minutes during rush hours) and every hour at night. Try a sunrise cruise for an incredible view of the harbor, the city and the Statue of Liberty. Visit this http://www.howstuffworks.com/framed.htm?... schedules and information. theres more try googling, I dont know what you've seen or whats considered lesser known, because they all are so familiar to me, enjoy your trip Museum of Sex..(yes it does exsist..) - its interesting to say the least! Will give you tons of talk about with your dinner partner. In that case, you would probably like to see the 5 Pointz Building, which is in Queens (Long Island City to be exact) It was an abandoned warehouse turned into this masterpiece of graffiti art--Dont be scared to look around, climb up the stairs to the top. Everyones really friendly and its like a hang-out for anyone and everyone. It was such a cool experience. These people are all pushing more tourist traps. You ought to check out greenwich village. Jump off the F or A train around west 4th and walk around. Also, for a fun night out, check out Coyote Ugly on 1st Ave and 9th Street |
