Original things to do in New York? |
Travel Info My parents are coming to NYC to visit me. Beside the usual touristic things to do, any good ideas of bars, restaurants, neighborhoods, stores to check out?? Travel Tips Broadway show...off broadway plays... Street fairs? South Street Seaport...tons and tons of stuff... Others Well, it all depends on how active your parents are and where their interests lie. They is definitely unique places to go and places to eat. Some suggestions: In terms of eating, try a different type of food they may have never tried! There is Indian Restaurant Row on East 6th between 2nd and 1st Avenues in the Village, or Italian Food on Bleecker Street or in Little Italy. There is of course Chinatown and Soul Food in Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant. You can be truly daring and try an Ethiopian or other African-themed restaurant in Manhattan or in Ft. Greene Brooklyn. Try to tailor a museum or walk to your folks interests. There is sure to be a museum for whatever they like -- or you can be bold and take them to a place like the Museum of Sex -- lol. Try walking through one of the city's diverse neighborhoods and checking out the cuisine at the same time. Walk through Greenwich Village and the East Village and check out a restaurant and a bar while you are at it. Take a trip north to The Cloisters and sample the changing neighborhood and cuisine. Travel into Park Slope for a bit of everything! Go to the Brooklyn Museum on the first Saturday of the month for events and dancing -- free! If you'd like, e-mail me with some of your folks' likes and interests and I'll come up with some more specific items. Also, you can check out a magazine like Time Out New York for unique things to do. We enjoy the view at the Top of the Rock- it's a great alternative to the Empire State as it offers a much more open view of the city as well as great views of Central Park. Great photo opps as the Chrysler Building and Empre State are possible background shots! For meals, share a 1 lb meat (that's just the meat - not the trimmings!) sandwich and piece of six inch high cheesecake at Roxy's in Times Square. Shopping - try the Apple Store for the latest gadgets. Visit nycvisit.com for possible street festivals or fairs during their visit. Attend a concert at Trinity Church or Cathedral of St John the Divine. Hear the Grammy award winning choir at the Brooklyn Taberbnacle. Always something fun in NYC - hope your parents enjoy their visit! If your looking for stores and restaurants, you may want to check out SoHo, the Village or Tribeca. They should be entertained enough there. |
