Moving to NYC...What will 70K afford?

Possibly moving to NYC. Working in Manhattan. Salary around 70K. Where are good nice aprtments outside city? And will that be enough salary to live well up there? I would like to find a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment outside of the city, but within a 20-30 minute commute. I would like a nice new apartment, but I would love to spend well under 2K per month. Any advice/comments?

You won't starve on that salary, but it sounds like you will definitely need to make some compromises in your lifestyle.
Manhattan's pretty big and you didn't say where within it you are working, but you might consider living in Brooklyn, Queens, or Jersey City. If by "good nice apartment" you mean tall, sparkling new construction, the portion of Jersey City along the waterfront and the Long Island City area of Queens are among your best bets.
Get familiar with the public transit system (look at http://www.mta.info, http://www.njtransit.com, and http://www.panynj.gov/commutingtravel/pa... and then start looking at apartment listings on Craigslist for a sense of prices. To find a 2 bedroom for well under $2000/mo, it's likely you will have to do one or more of the following:

-- accept a commute closer to 45 minutes than 30
-- take a broad view of "new" apartment if not "nice"
-- stay out of the extremely hip and popular neighborhoods
-- work with a real estate broker, and thus pay a broker's fee of $2000 or more.

Apartments that are really cheap for the parameters given online are often smaller than claimed and/or on an unsafe block. To investigate safety issues, go to www.nyc.gov to find out what police precinct a property is in, then call the precinct to ask about crime stats.

Bear in mind that once you find a place you like with good subway or bus access, you're not going to need a car, and a subway/bus monthly pass only costs about $80/month, so you may be able to cut some transportation expenses out of your budget and thus afford more in rent.

Look in Astoria, Queens. It's a pretty nice neighborhood, seems safe with about a 30 minute commute into Midtown Manhattan. My sister has a one bedroom apartment there (with a full living room and kitchen) for $975 per month.
On a single salary of 70K, you could afford a co-op two-bedroom apartment in a good, not great, neighborhood in Brooklyn along Ocean Parkway.
Not that much I bet.
these people are all retarded you can buy a house in westchester on that salary wont be the biggest or greatest that is a close commute to nyc or even rockland county shop around get a good mortgage man you will be fine you could buy a cheap lake house in greenwood lake they go from like 50 thousand to 500 thousand up there for something really nice and if you dont mind an hour commute you could own your own home in less than 10 years and build on that .the selling price of the home will sky rocket by then you could sell it and move to rockland county which is 20 min outside of manhattan get a good mortgage or buy a condo , condos in my town in pearl river start at 150 and go all the way up to 750 thousand to own so you can find something i can drive to jfk in less than a hour from where i live with little traffic so search the counties to the north of nyc and drive most towns have the trains that take you in to new york and from there the subways and buses take you anywhere
