Is Harlem (New York) really dangerous?

because am going there this summer, and people talk as if its the most dangerous place on earth?

just like anywhere else in the world you just have to keep your whits about you , dont make yourself stickout as a tourist ect ect , its no worse than many parts of london or any other capital city for that matter
Harlem is not dangerous, I spent 3 days there last year, never once felt threatened.

As with any travel in an unfamilair city, be aware of your surroundings, don't flash cash or expensive items [camera, cell phone, watch, jewelry] and enjoy yourself.
harlem is a pretty big place... it depends on where u go but ya there are some rough spots there.. there are places in new york i wouldnt wish my worst enemy to be caught in..
