Fort Lee is closest to NYC. It is RIGHT acros the Hudson River, across from the far northern tip of Manhattan

From NJ, there are several ways to get to NYC. Try and do a search on Yohoo Maps of the address you want to start from and your destination. Both will give you distance, travel time, and directions.
The NJ side of The GW bridge is in Ft.Lee , it don't get much closer than that.
Fort Lee is right across the bridge, Passaic is further
