I went last September. I stayed in one of the cheapest hotels there. No experience with rats or roaches. Walked around Manhattan at night, and alone. Can't wait to go back! Have fun!

Well where are you hanging out in NY? it's a really big place.
Every city has cockroaches. I found one in a small diner travelling to the north from the south.
NY is expensive but theres things to do that are free.
Weather goes from humid to mild in the summer. If you aren't used to humidity then you need to be prepared for it.
So far the weather has been pretty mild.
It's a big city but there are friendly people there.

There was a problem with one restaurant that was infested with rats, but it's been cleared up. There are rats like in any city, but you would be very unlikely to encounter them if you stayed in a hotel. Same goes for cockroaches, though certainly there's a chance you'd run into one. The weather so far has been very nice, it is 75 fahrenheit right now, typically it's in the low 80's, can be humid sometimes, but very nice usually.
Expense is relative. Moscow, Oslo, Tokyo and London etc are all considered more expensive than New York, but NY certainly is not cheap.
The Northeast United States has the lowest divorce rate of any region in the US (New York is not the number 1, I think Massachusetts is) probably because there are more couples living together here than getting married, as they do in more convservative areas of the country. So when they break up, there is no divorce.
NYC, like all large cities, has a rat problem, but it is most noticeable in the slum areas. The nice parts of town if a rat shows up, it is treated about the same as would a member of Al Qaeda. Cockroaches are a much more universal problem, but again are being suppressed.
NYC is currently rated as fifth most expensive city in the USA, something like fifteenth in the world.
Don't know the divorce rate. Doubt it's that low.
We had a couple days that hit 90F last week, but this week so far has had absolutely gorgeous weather, temps in the low to mid 70s in the day, around 60 at night. Had plenty of rain last month so everything is green. Supposed to go into the mid eighties later in the week.
you don't have to go to New York city to find cockroaches and rats, just go to somewhere very dirty and you'll find them :) it also depends on where in New York you go. there are the high class part, there are the slum part, etc.. find a guide book or find more information in google.com, wikipedia.org...

not sure about the expensiveness, but living in big city is always more expensive rather than in smaller city nearby. unless you can live with someone willing to shelter you, that way you won't need to spend a penny, beside for keeping yourself from starving and clothed. how hot, depends on the wind, does it bring the cooler weather from Canada or does it bring the hotter weather from Florida. but there are more (water) rain during the summer rather than any other season (autumn/fall, spring, winter) here in the east coast.

low divorce rate, in my opinion, would be from people only living together, having kids, and not actually married lawfully. so if those people split up, they just go their separate way without having to go through divorce because they're never married in the first place :) a lot of people nowadays think that it is a hassle to get married lawfully, paperworks to filled out, the pre-nuptial arrangement, if divorced there will be a lot more things to take care of... etc... you know...
