Travel Tips
There is so much to do in downtown Manhattan, you couldn't possibly do it all in one day. There are peddlers in Battery Park, a lot of them near Castle Clinton; they sell inexpensive designer knock-off bags, watches, etc. There are a lot of artists in the park - you can have your portrait or profile done in charcoal or other media. There are Chinese calligraphers who will paint your name in either Chinese or English. There is a Universal Soldier Korean War Memorial and a fairly new Irish Hunger Memorial.

Visit the National Museum of the American Indian, see the US Customs House (Herman Melville worked there for many years), visit the New York Police Museum (in New York's first police precinct)

From the park you can walk up the promenade (lovely walkway with joggers, dogs and benches facing the water) and go to the World Financial Center - upscale shops, restaurants with outdoor dining, a huge atrium where wedding parties come to take photos, AND Custard Beach - don't miss it - great ice cream in flavors like creme brulee (they'll give you samples if you can't make up your mind). It's a short walk to South Street Seaport. Across the street from the World Financial Center is the World Trade Center site - across the street from that is Century21. If you walk up Broadway past the Stock Exchange, be sure to see City Hall, Trinity Church - St Paul's Chapel has a very moving tribute to the World Trade Center. Don't miss the Woolworth Building at 233 Broadway - it's so beautiful, inside and out, it takes my breath away. You can't go into the building except to go to the restaurant inside, but walk into the lobby anyway - the Woolworth Building used to be the tallest building in New York and it just magnificent

There is a downtown branch of Les Halles on John Street and Broadway (if you love chocolate, marzipan or marshmallows, try Evelyn's Chocolates at 4 John Street across the street) Les Halles usually has excellent food and is a good place to go for lunch or dinner (Anthony Bourdain is wonderful)

You can walk to Chinatown if you have any time or strength left, or save that for another day (Do Chinatown, Soho and Tribeca another time). Enjoy downtown
Others
NYSE -- can't go in, just look at outside
Federal Hall -- where George Washington was inaugurated
Bull statue
Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian (this is the NY outpost of a DC museum, but it's free and cool)
NY Museum of Jewish Heritage
Ground Zero/Freedom Tower Construction Site
Century 21 if you like to shop, also J&R Electronics World

Walk depends on your speed and whether there are stops, of course...typically half an hour or a bit less.
