its very expensive in the city... good luck... an average apt is like 2500/month without utilities, heat, a/c or electric. basically its 2500/month for a roof on top of your head
NYC is a big place, with five boroughs, and even in Manhattan rentals costs depend on the neighborhood. Probably the cheapest in Manhattan outside slum areas would be in Inwood or Washington Heights, where a studio apartment might run you $900-1100/month. I doubt anything in the Bronx outside slum areas would be that cheap. You ought to be able to meet that price in the other boroughs, though.
