You might want to try to west village...it's a little bit more artsy than some of the other locations in the city.

Anywhere near 5th ave, the theater district or downtown. Near 5th ave is the most expensive but by far the best
i go to NY alot
I would say the outer boroughs Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. It is cheaper to live, but you would have to take public transportation to get to school
