How much does it cost to live in NYC?

Travel Info
just wondering -- give me estimate for rent for one bedroom, bills, no car, groceries, and entertainment.

Travel Tips
I'm gonna ballpark it for you, based on the average of what my friends pay....

Rent: $2500 a month, minimum for a SMALL place
Electric: $125 a month
Phone: at least $40 a month - if you use Vonage or something like that, $60-$75 if you with the phone company
Cable: easy $90 a month for basic
Other "bills" - depends on where you rent - some charge you for garbage removal, etc.
Groceries - that depends on you. Most people I know spend $75 to $100 a week for one person
Entertainment: minimum $200 a week for one dinner out and a club once a week

This does not include transpo other than walking. Cabs can be expensive, but the subway and buses aren't as pricey. You're looking at the bare minimum of $3500 a month just to have a roof over your head and food on your table. This doesn't count any other necessities - like new clothes, etc. Manhattan is one of the few places where you can make $100K a year and be considered "poor".The best way to find a place in New York, is to go on "CraigsList" and see if anyone has a "Sublet" available. A one bedroom will cost you around $2000 a month if you can find one. The next best thing is to just rent a room in someone apt to see if you really want to stay here. Not having a car helps, to crazy to drive here anyway and you can take subways, bus, walk, trains to get out of town are easy. I have a studio I rent out for no more then two weeks at a time in midtown. You can also look on the internet for other available places. Oh it's great here by the way.
How can anyone possibly answer this question for you? I have no idea what you spend for groceries. I don't know what kind of entertainment you will be spending money on. If you ask me something that I can answer, like how much is a quart of milk?, I'd be happy to answer you.
Zippy seems to be answering based on Manhattan prices, but really, it completely depends on where you live in NYC -- there is a huge range.

That said, you can find a 1-bedroom apt (that is, kitchen, livingroom and 1 bedroom) in a decent-but-not-incredible neighborhood in Queens or Brooklyn for $1200 or so. Adjust up or down depending on how trendy a neighborhood you want, how close to the subway, whether you're willing to take a basement apt, etc. Expect fewer amenities than you would get in most places in the US.

I pay a little over $1350 for a 1-bedroom in Queens, but my place comes with a little backyard.

My electricity runs around $35, but I don't have a/c, and I turn things off when I'm not using them. The subway and regular buses (not express) cost $2 (with 1 free transfer), or if you're commuting every day, you can get a 1-month unlimited use metrocard for $76. Washing and drying a load of laundry costs me around $3.50. A movie is about $10-$12. Groceries aren't that differently priced from other places I've lived around the country, but the quality of fresh fruits and veggies in the supermarkets is lower. Same goes for fish, despite the fact that we're a port city. A dinner out in a nice neighborhood restaurant (that is, not in a trendy Manhattan hotspot, not listed in Zagat, no world-famous chef, but nice ambiance and yummy food) near my apt runs about $30/person. (I don't drink, so that doesn't include alcoholic beverages.)

You don't need to make $100k a year -- I make waaaaaaay less than that, as do most New Yorkers, and I do just fine here. I just don't choose a lifestyle and location that demands that kind of money.

There's a lot more to NYC than Manhattan....
