Recommend area to stay at hotel in NY?

I plan to go to NY soon. I would like a 3 star hotel/motel in an area that's near malls where knock off purses, etc. are sold. Any suggestions, please. Reply only if you are serious. Thanks!!

Suggestions for best value midtown area Manhattan hotels would be as follows:
* Skyline (at 10th Ave and 49th Street) larger rooms and still just steps away from Theater District
* Portland Square Hotel - on 47th Street - again, just steps away fron Fifth Avenue (shopping) and Times Square
* Wellington Hotel (at Broadway and 53rd? or near here)

Check individual websites (Google them) and see about packages or specials during the time you want to stay.
All are clean and usually less expensive than the better known hotels like the Hilton at 54th and Sixth or the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.
AVOID HOTEL PENNSYLVANIA - FILTHY
MILFORD PLAZA - same !

As for knock-offs - no need for malls! Check out Chinatown or street vendors - they will find you! If you have certain purses, bags or jeans - take pictures with you. Chinatown now is so 'up to the minute' that many designer items in this month's magazines are available in their stores or 'backrooms'. Never go into a backroom alone - best with several friends! Portland Square Hotel
Stay in a Marriott near a Chinatown in New Jersey. Take the subway to Canal St. and you would buy knock offs in Chinatown on Canal St. in NY.
A high school student who went with her family approx 3 yrs ago said that's where they stayed and it wasn't exceeding small and cramped. Said it was OK.
