Travel Info Why are art museums so damn expensive? Travel Tips They are expensive because everything is expensive from staff costs to shows to the insurance on their collection. Most museums don't even make enough on admissions to cover their operating costs and rely on additional donations and corporate support. However, the Metropolitan Museum is only a suggested fee so you can pay what you wish. MoMA and the Gugenheim have pay what you wish on Friday evenings. Some other museums have similar days or times of reduced or "what you wish" fares. There is a magazine called "Museums" and they have editions for most of the major cities in America, you can pick up the local edition in larger bookstores, art bookstores, or newshops near museum mile. They have many coupons for two for one admissions to several museums which would reduce the cost of going at any time you wished. But do visit our museums, you can have a drink anywhere but our museums are really some of the best in the world. Others Go to the Met...it's a suggested price only...pay what you can afford. i've gone to them close to before closing, when it's by donations only, cause they know you won't get to see the whole collection of art they have, cause it's almost closing time ... if you do this every so often, or once a day, week, or whatever, and keep track of where you left off, you can see a whole museum for a few bucks! You go out and buy a couple Rembrandt's starting at $54 million, toss in a Picasso or two, and you'll soon see why art museums have to charge high admission prices. Even cheapo Van Gogh's run over $20 million. I go to museums on friday evenings. MOMA from 5 - 9 fridays FREE, Morgan Library 5 - 9 friday FREE (and nice classical music played by live musicians) Whitney friday evenings pay what you wish Enjoy |
