What are the best areas to stay in and around Newcastle?

Travel Info
I'm thinking of moving down but don't know it that well. I quite like the idea of staying in city centre area but would also consider somewhere close by that I could travel in to city by metro as I don't drive.

Travel Tips
Cost would be an issue - city centre wise, there's the Quayside BUT it's expensive.
Parts of Byker are ok - Heaton's not bad but student central so lots of burglaries.
Wallsends good - shops, public transport and 10 mins from centre on Metro...flats etc are reasonably priced too.
North Shields is a bit further out but nice in parts.
Good Luck
