Travel Tips
Visa, American Express, and Mastercard are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and boutiques on EITHER side of the Falls.

Also, if you have a bank ATM card, I would consider not bringing any funds, but just use the bank card to withdraw what you need when you get here. Both Canadian and American ATM machines accept your card if it is part of the Plus and/or Interac network. Just look for the symbol on the back of the card.

I generally go to the States from Canada with just enough money to pay cab fare. I then stop at the nearest ATM and withdraw cash for the day. By doing so, my bank gives me the current exchange rate and I don't pay any huge fees from the foreign currency exchange places.

If Americans come to Canada, as of today US$100.00 = CAD$106.00, but a small restaurant or boutique may take your US dollars "at par", meaning they don't offer you any exchange rate.
Others
always use USA currency, World wide accepted everywhere.
Canadian on the Canadian side, US on the US side.

You will be able to spend either on both sides, you just wont always get a fair exchange rate. For example, I was at a restaurant on Saturday in Niagara Falls NY and when we got the bill the total was in both currencies $35 something US and then in small print under it $45 something CND. The rate they gave was $0.77 USD per CND dollar while the rate the bank is giving now is more like $0.92 USD per CND.

Us your credit card, it's easiest and you'll always get a good rate.
Consider the fact that at the Niagara Falls area since the Falls span both the US and Canadian borders, Canadians will take American money but the Americans will NOT take Canadian money. =)
Canadian money on Canada side.
Visiting the Canadian or American side? It's always been easier and better to have the local currency so that you don't have to deal with conversion rates at retail outlets. But now that the two currencies are closer in value than they have been for over thirty years it may be a bit different. The last time this happened there were some US retailers that would take the Canadian Dollar at par, because it was just slightly lower in value than the US Dollar. Be careful of airport currency exchange booths. They have very high service charges. Check with your local bank first. Also, check with your credit card company. Credit cards used to offer very favourable exchange rates, but many of them are adding fees as well.
