Are passports required for travel into Canada now? I keep hearing one thing and then another as far what you can technically do.

I don't think so yet, I was just there a few weeks ago coming from the US and didn't need one.

Stay on the american side, and visit nearby Lackawanna.
If you are DRIVING then you DO NOT need a passport to cross the border or get back into the U.S. until sometime in 2008 ( they haven't set an exact date yet ) just License/birth certificate, If you are FLYING you do need a passport
If you are flying to Canada you need a passport. If you are driving across the boarder you just need a photo ID and your birth certificate. Driving into Canada the border people were nice to us. Driving back into to the US the boarder people were a-holes.
