Niagara Falls were formed naturally, but erosion has tried to chip away at the falls and make it more of a gentle flowing river. To avoid that, both USA and Canada have periodically tried to make "repairs" to the falls. For example, I remember hearing that in the 1950s, reinforced cement was added in certain areas at the edges of the Horseshoe Falls area to improve water flow and slow erosion.
