Do I need a passport to enter into Canada border even if I am a greencard holder? |
Travel Info I visited my family here in Michigan and we are planning to travel to Niagara falls, Ontario Canada side. I forgot to bring my passport, but I brought my permanent resident card with me( green card). Can I still enter into the Canada?I need answer very badly. Travel Tips I am a greencard holder and have visited Canada eight times this year and Mexico twice (and learned the hard way). The only official answer is one that you'd receive from a Customs officer at the US/Canadian border. They accept phone calls, so look up the number at the border crossing(s) you plan to use and give them a ring. You will NOT need it to enter Canada, but you will need it to RETURN to the US legally. Typically, they will accept your driver's license and green card upon return (if they even ask for it) -- and they should! Legally as a green cardholder, you are required to have your passport with you whenever you leave the country. If you don't have the proper paperwork, you can obtain a one-time visa waiver for $265 (and, yes, they take American Express!), have your biometrics done while they check you out on 5 databases, after a long wait in an aggravating line with no bathrooms (on the US/Mex border). The current law states that you must have a passport to travel to Canada or Mexico by FLYING. If you are DRIVING, you do not need a passport yet. I was there a week ago. My husband is a greencard holder and I am an american citizen. They asked for my husband's passport and green card when we entered Canada..and when we were entering the US, they asked for both. So..in my experience you need both despite the current law is..just for reference I was there during the orange alert phase between July 1st and July 3rd so it may have been a tighter security than usual.
