It is so deep it equals the height of the Falls above, 52 metres (170 feet). The Whirlpool Rapids stretch for 1.6 kilometres (1 mile). The water surface here drops 15 metres (50 feet) and the rushing waters can reach as high as 9 mps (30 fps). The Whirlpool is a basin 518 metres (1,700 feet) long by 365 metres (1,200 feet) wide with depths up to 38 metres (125 feet). It is here where the river makes a sharp right-angled turn.
