Niagara falls question? |
Travel Info where is all that water coming from? how come it never ends? Travel Tips This is a good question, the Niagara River is fed mostly from the 4 of the 5 great lakes and the 5 great lakes are fed from springs and other surrounding rivers and lakes. Fresh water recycles from many resources, the main one falls from the sky (rain, snow) and the others are springs, ice and water treatment stations. The Niagara Falls will always flow as long as rain and snow falls from the sky. The river flows into lake Ontario then the st. Lawrence river then into the Atlantic ocean NOT Pacific ocean that's on the west coast. The Falls did stop flowing back in the 70's but only because ice blocked the flow of water in Fort Erie. The falls only had a trickle of water going over it at that time. This will never happen again. Hope that helped and educated you a bit on this topic. Others The water comes down the Niagra River from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. It comes all the way from Lake Superior where there is a constant supply of people flushing their toilets. This picture shows you the relative heights of each of the Great Lakes. As you can see there is a considerable drop from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/great_lakes... The river Niagara runs from lake Erie to the falls, it is just the flow of the river .That is why it never ends. After the falls it runs its course to Lake Ontario. At Kingston the St,Lawrence River runs all the way to the pacific ocean , Don't know which way that water flow is.AT least I'm honest about that! |
