Stress free travel tips? |
Travel Info anyone have any tips on how to have a stress free road trip to florida, with a six month old in july? its going to be a long drive and very hot when we get there. theres also 2 other children 14 and 11, and two more adults. any tips would be helpful, thanks. Travel Tips Best advice be prepared!!!! Have ALL your reservation #'s and travel documents/vouchers. Also mapquest a few alternate routes just in case I-75 (on the west side of the state), I-95 (on the east side of the state) and the turnpike (center of state) jam up, there are loads of county roads, but those are the only main ones North and South. Of course snack food and loads of wet wipes. Loads of stuff to do like travel games both real and electronic. It will take some research but worth it to find pit stops or rest stops for you and your baby. Places where you can nurse or feed. I recommend state and county parks, there are loads in Florida and most of them free, in addition to traditional rest stops. Many parks in the Florida park system also have showers, which may be a welcome afternoon relief after all day driving. Others I'm not an adult, and I don't have kids. I just know, from being a kid and going on many a road trip, that bringing plenty of pillows and blankets and cranking up the air makes me quite happy. I also live in Florida, and know that wearing tank tops and shorts helps with the heat factor. Enjoy your trip! Being a teenager, I think I have a few basic ideas and some we use with our 11month old. 1. Make sure everyone has food. If you don't want them to eat in the car, make sure everyone (including yourself) is well fed and has their bathroom breaks. Everyone will be less irritable and some might get sleepy, which cuts time. 2. For the 14 & 11 yr old, you might consider buying them a hand held game of some sort, or hooking up a home game system to a portable DVD player with a power converter(at least 150 watts, to be safe) 3. Baby will need plenty of toys to keep entertained, but keep them interested with sights on the road, anything that might be interesting to them: cars, buildings, people, use you imagination. 4. When stopping, make sure everyone gets out for a brisk walk around, cramps from sitting in a seat can also make them irritable. 5. Along with the DVD player, consider bringing some of their favorite movies. 6. Make sure everyone's comfortable, bring pillows, etc. 7.Try to use the kid's hobbies to cut time: if they like draw, bring drawing stuff. If they like to eat, bring food. Whatever they enjoy doing, try to put it in the car with you, but be reasonable, don't put a soccer ball in the car with you. Quiet things work better during the day, louder toys to keep you awake if you plan on driving at night. It will be tough if the baby will be sleeping in the car. He/she won't be sleepy at the hotel. Definitely consider putting each older child with an adult, not sitting next to each other the entire trip. Moving people around also helps. Don't clutter up the car with "have to have's". Individual IPODS, new books, books on tape for the driver, etc.. Good luck I traveled about a 16 hr trip there with a 5yr old and a 3month old. My best suggestion is travel through the night!!!!!! Just take turns driving - I'm a night owl and hubby is a morning person so it worked out great. Roads are less busy and the kids slept most of it. |
