Orlando in August? |
Travel Info Going to Orlando in late August. How likely is it that hurricains hit and how strong do they get inland? Also trying to find the best beaches for a couple day trips. Me and my sister are going. So I figured for her we'd go to a more popular beach and the next day for me go to a more scenic nature lovers less crowded beach. Any suggestions? Travel Tips What Rachel said is right on. As far as how strong can a Hurricane get Inlaand? Depends on size of hurricane as it aproaches... On Friday Aug 13th 2004, Hurricane Charley had sustained winds of over 105 mph after travling over land over 150 miles. The other major Hurricane to hit Orlando was Hurricane Donna in 1960. So its not to likely one will hit Orlando with force,,, but it certainly is not impossible for a hurricane to basically cut right across central florida and have Major Winds 120 mph+. As far as beaches..... I would make the drive to the gulf, Siesta Key (less crowded) or Clearwater.....Cocoo Beach (very popular) on the Atlantic would be my choice for something close and on the east coast. Source(s): local Other Travel Tips 45% chance not very likely but still be very cautious ive lived in orlando all my life...august along with september are the hottest months of the year...and i mean brutal heat and humidity...as far as storms and hurricanes...storms occur every day and last only 1-2 hours at the most...so expect it to rain each day of your beach trip...but dont leave...the storm will end shortly....hurricanes do happen...but its hard to guess this far in advance....keep your eye on the weather and hope for the best...since aug and sept is peak hurricane season!!! good luck! August is very Hot! It is hurricane season right now, so anything is possible. Will they come inland? Yes they will and have. Just pay attention to the weather. Daytona Beach is a younger crowd. St. Augestine is nice for a day trip. Good luck. Have fun and stay safe. Orlando in August will be hot, hot, hot. In Florida, during hurricane season, it's anybody's guess as to the likelihood of a hurricane. Inland in Central Florida you don't get the full brunt of it like the folks who live on the coasts do, but wind gusts of up to 60 mph are not uncommon. They don't have hurricane rooms in Orlando for nothing. As far as beaches go, I'd recommend Cocoa Beach which is about an hour east of Orlando. Clearwater Beach over in Clearwater which is about 2 hours west of Orlando, and if you don't mind driving 3 or more hours, I recommend Sanibel Island, on the Gulf Coast. Sanibel Island is very low key with white sand, sea shells and warm water. Enjoy your trip! Hurricanes are very likely in August. Power can go out inland and branches can do a great deal of damage as flying objects with the wind. You might consider buying weather insurance so if there is a hurricane, you can get a refund on tickets and hotel deposits. Daytona Beach is the world's most famous beach and caters to young people. New Smyrna is a little closer (to Orlando) and a little more family oriented. Both are under 2 hours away - depending of traffic jams. Then there is Playalinda beach - a topless beach. It is ungodly hot in August - is that the only time you can come? |
