Check with your regular car insurance to see if they will cover you in the USA. If no, try to use a credit card that provides rental car coverage. Also ask the RAC for advice. If all else fails, grit your teeth and buy the insurance package offered by the rental agency. Being in an "at fault" accident while under-insured is a bad thing. The USA drives on the right and that can be a problem when you are used to driving on the left. It is more of a problem if you are trying to drive while jet-lagged.
