Help about staying in Ottawa during Canada Day? |
Travel Info My friend and I are coming to Ottawa from the US during the week of Canada Day. I'm a tad worried about finding good things to do and venturing into bad neighborhoods. We're staying at the Radisson (Parliament Hill) on Queen St. Is that a relatively safe place? Also, any information on public transportation and any sort of general do's or don't's would be much appreciated. Thanks! Travel Tips An excellent time to visit! It will most likely be very hot. Depending on what you like, you shouldn't be worrying about things to do. Likewise about public transportation or the wandering into bad neighbourhoods. While there are some sketchy places to be, none of them are downtown Ottawa, and as long as you avoid drunk frat boys, you should be okay. Besides the fact it is Canada Day (huge party day in the capital) your accomodations put you smack downtown Ottawa. Public transportation is very good and comes to you in bus form. You will be within walking distance of, Parliament Hill, The National Gallery of Canada, National War Memorial, Sparks Street and the ByWard Market, lots of downtown restaurants and bars which feature music etc. You are just across the river from Hull, Quebec, location of the natural history museum amongst other things. Here are a couple of sites to check out for other things to do. Enjoy! http://www.ottawatourism.ca/forms/index.... http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/nor... Others It's in a safe area, it's kind of the edge of the business district of downtown. It's a block or so away from the main streets the buses use. If you stick downtown you're not really going to end up in any bad areas. The bad parts of Ottawa are few and far between, and not anywhere near you will be. For things to do, there ar the concerts on Parliament Hill, and all museums are free on Canada Day (I strongly suggest checking out the new War Museum at Lebreton Flats - about a 2-3 minute bus ride from your hotel). Transit Info: http://www.octranspo.com Canada Day info: http://www.canadascapital.gc.ca/bins/ncc... yeah listen to all of the above, safe area have fun, check the hotel lobbey for ideas. Ottawa has the best bike paths in the world, you can rent them. Lots to do in a short walking area. changing of the guards on parliament hill, your near the canal so take a boat ride. Visit Quebec on the other side of the Ottawa River. Have fun and enjoy I agree with all the previous answers. Ottawa is a safe city. If you need more tourist information, your hotel will be able to provide some, or they'll be able to give you directions to the nearest tourist information kiosk.
