St.Catharines,Ont and The Surburban areas of Ottawa,Ont???

Travel Info
In your opinions, which places should I raise my kids:8 years old(Autistic, not a severe case) and 10 years old normal.I am a Nail Technician and my husband is Computer Operator.Which place do you think is good for our family interms of cheap Apartment rentals, housing prices, good schools and easier to find jobs in our field.I need your opinions on:St.Catharines,Ont and the Surburban areas of Ottawa:Nepean,Orleans,Kanata and Gloucester,Ont.???Thank you for your advice.

Travel Tips
Both are decent, comparable areas. Rent/housing in St. Catharines seems a bit cheaper, jobs would be about the same, although if you're in suburban Ottawa you would more than likely have to commute into the downtown core for something computer related.
If you're picky about weather, St. Catharines is milder in the winter. Both areas have decent schools, low crime, and are all around good places to live.
St. Catharines is only a 10 minute drive to Niagara Falls where they might be more job oppourtunity. I find Ottawa pretty isolated, even for a big city. With St. Catharines, you are also only an hour drive away from Toronto.
Public transportation in St. Catharines isn't fantastic, Ottawa has a better system there, but it is still quite a commute if you are coming from the suburbs into the city.

They're both good cities, so it jsut depends on your preference. Winter is the deciding factor for me: Ottawa's great in the summer, but too cold in the winter for me. Source(s): I grew up in the St. Catharines area and lived in Ottawa while in university.

Other Travel Tips
Both are about equal in all aspects. The only difference is that St. Catharines is located near to the Niagara appellation wine growing area and the southern Ontario orchards of other fruits which inspire perhaps a higher percentage of finer restaurants, and is also located near to the border for occasional excursions to the USA to get cheap chicken, cheap milk and other dairy, and cheap beer.
With all these questions -- do you actually have your citizenship, work permits, etc, lined up and all that? I feel obligated to point out that you can't just drive across the border and settle in a new country. You won't be immediately eligible for OHIP. Etc, etc.

I have no idea what the job market is like for manicurists, but -- there's nowhere near as many nail salons in Canada as there are in the States. I don't know whether that means fewer jobs for you, or more given the lack of experience up here. Probably a bit of both.

As for the stuff you actually asked about: oh, yikes. Too general a question. How suburban do you want? Orl茅ans and Kanata are pretty far from the city centre, and Kanata, in particular, isn't particularly cheap for renting. Buying is another story. Orl茅ans and the east end in general is cheaper, in most cases, than Nepean/Kanata/the rest of the west end.

St Catharines: no idea...
barhaven... ottawa
Ottawa. All the good government jobs are here. Your hubby is a computer operator than try a shot at a job for Mr. Harper (he pays well). If he gets it your golden!

If you spent any time in Toronto (as I did) or any other major city, you wont find a trip from Kanata, Orleans or Barrhaven to downtown a big deal. Only people who have been in Ottawa too long say that. They think the traffic is bad but it really isn't. Get a reality check people.

On the plus side too there are some tech companies (some who cater to the government) right in Kanata. If you hubby gets a job there you will be set. Thats your best bet. Ottawa is the best place to live. 3+ years since I left Toronto and the best move I ever made.
