Travel Tips
if you are flying into Mexico - you WILL need a passport .

If you are driving into Mexico - just proof of citizenship is required ( that will change by the end of the year)

You can renew your passport via mail if its not been expired for over 10 years. Here is a link that you can print out the application and it will give you all the necessary items you need to renew it

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

You absolutely need a passport now due to new rules. I'm not sure about renewing, but I know that to get one you can go to the Post Office. I would start there if I were you. To get a new passport it takes 6-8 weeks. You can pay extra for expedited service and get it in two weeks. It may not take as long for a renewal. Do not try to go to Mexico w/o it!
Go to your nearest Post Office, that is where you'll get the forms to fill for renewing your passport, and be told of the cost involved in that.
I believe you will need your passport. Your current passport is actually valid for a few years. Here is a link to answer some of your questions
