I don't plan on going out of the country anytime soon but, I wanna get a passport anyway. What is the process?

Do I have to show plane tickets in order to get one?

For a passport you can go to any US Post Office for the paperwork. You'll need an certified birth certificate and maybe a photo ID. You will need to get passport photos taken (AAA or most anywhere these days) It's a very good idea to get your passport now because the rules are scheduled to change in the near future to return to the US from Canada. Right now a photo drivers license is enough. Soon your passport will be required.

Hi,

I do not believe that you have to have travel documents to secure a passport however you will have to contact your closest passport agency to find out for sure. You may be able to secure one by simply telling them that you are planning a cruise or vacation out of the country this summer and need to go ahead and apply. If they agree it will take 6-8 weeks to arrive.

The other (and much more expensive) option is to use a third party service which will process your application (many times submitting phantom travel intineraries) and submit it to the passport folks using the expedited option. If you use this method you can have a passport in as little as a few days however the total expense will be >$200 as you must pay the regular application fee, expedition fee and the third party agency's fee.
its easy , go to your post office, they have the forms and even take snaps for the passport picture. All you need is the original birth certificate and some more stuff. pay up the processing fees and you are done.

if you go to the post office, they can get you the paperwork that you need, and what information you will need to bring with you. you may need to go to a larger post office if you live in a small town.
had to get my passport
Here's a link to the governments passport site. No, you don't need to prove you're going anywhere to get a passport. Right now, lots of people are applying for them because of the new laws requiring a passport for going to Canada or Mexico. Before, all you needed was ID.

When I got my passport I got a certified copy of my birth certificate from the county I was born in, went and had passport photos taken at AAA (it's cheap for members), and went to the main post office. The passport department is in the post office in most larger cities. I filled out the form, showed my drivers license and birth certificate, gave them the photos and about $80. I got my passport in the mail several weeks later.
Good luck.
