Good ways to pack?

Travel Info
I'm going to dc and new york for a week and i'm not sure how all my stuff will fit in my suitcase?

I can only bring one.

i need to fit
a dress
a coat
a few sweatshirts
7 days of clothes including underwear and socks and all
my toiletries
and a few other things

are there any good ways to save space?

Travel Tips
First of all, wear you bulkiest items - coat, boots, etc. Because you're going to big cities, it might be a good idea to purchase some of the heaviest toiletries once you get to your destination - shampoo, conditioner. Or purchase a 2-in-1, shampoo/conditioner or shampoo/body soap combo to decrease the number of containers that you have to bring.
As for the dress, make sure it's one that you can dress up and down and you can get more than one wear out of it. I like to pick a color palate for when I'm going on vacation - tan and blue, yellow and black, brown and pink, etc. That way I know that I can mix and match all the pieces. It also decreases the number of shoes you have to bring. Another space saving idea is to fill your shoes with small items - socks, etc.
I know that I can't travel without a blow dryer, and there are some really powerful collapsible ones on the market.

roll your clothes...it is more efficient use of space. keeps them fairly unwrinkled too. have fun!
Best thing ever invented is the vacumm bag for travelling.U can pack anything in,then use a vacumm & it compresses everything up.Definately a space saver.Usually if am not travelling,i wud use mine to save space in my cupboard. It can flatten up pillows, comforters etc .So now even my winter clothes are stored into vacumm bags, its the best thing ever invented..LoL..a must if u travel much.Wont help wid the weight issue but as for space,it works wonders.Hope this tip helps.Cheers :)

try getting the biggest suitcase you can find. i don't like rolled up clothes because they always end up wrinkled. vacuum bags are inconvenient because how are you going to find a vacuum when you are ready to pack to come back home? i would try the bigger suitcase but hey you won't have wrinkled clothes. i would also recommend folding flatly don't fold clothes in to big bulks, try to lay your coat on top in half maybe. but definitely try a bigger suitcase. hope this helps, holly oh can you take a hang up bag for clothes that go on hangers? that would save room if you could not get a bigger suitcase
Vacuum bags are a great tool to use for packing. However, you are still limited to approximately 50 lbs on a domestic flight no matter how tightly you have things packed. An Eagle Creek packing folder was my lifesaver when I traveled to Africa this past summer. It is a board that you fold your clothes around. It keeps your clothes flat and wrinkle free and pulls them tight and compact without the wrinkles you get with vacuum bags. You can find them here http://www.luggage.com/eagle-creek-4031x...

I also take a small bottle of Downy Wrinkle release. If your clothes do get a few wrinkles, Downy takes them out completely. I threw away my travel iron and use wrinkle release now.

Wear your most comfortable heavy shoes on your flight and your coat if appropriate for the weather. Try and pack your dress outfits with the ability to wear the same pair of shoes for most outfits. Shoes take a lot of space. Take outfits that are interchangeable.

I have found that you can pack for a seven day trip with about five days worth of clothes if you recycle pants and use them more than one day with a different top or jacket.

Have a wonderful trip!
