Saxophone as carry-on item?

Travel Info
I am taking a commercial domestic flight tomorrow on United Airlines. I am hoping to bring my alto saxophone with me. Seeing as how it costs over three grand, I would like to take it with me as a carry-on as opposed to checking or shipping it. The case is small, so I am not worried about the size requirements, but I was wondering it if would get past security (i.e. would it be seen as a weapon or something like that). Any thoughts or experience in this??

Travel Tips
You won't actually be able to carry it into the cabin of the plane, but you will be able to ask the check in counter if you can take it to the gate as a special check in. The airlines allow some baggage to be carried to the gate and be put into a special compartment so that it is readily available once you get off of the plane. They typically do this with kids strollers, car seats, personal items, etc.
Others
It would probaly be best to call your airline and ask them. I checked on the gov't site that lists allowed and prohibited items and could find nothing about musical instruments. The website is listed below so you can look for yourself.
